I prayed to You to tell You I had prayed,
as if Almighty God had been by chance delayed;
In pride, I noted my humility,
then asked You answer but ’one request of me.’
Foolish, I, to taunt the God above
with tears, and cries, and pleadings for His love.
Did somehow I come to forget,
that all I was had God solely beget?
Or did some thought stray to this lowly mind,
that God would I to mortal means now bind?
Shame, to boast and say that answered prayer
had been the product of my daily, constant prayer!
’Twas mercy then, ’tis mercy now, in every moment still
to Christ resign my hurt, my pain, and every taunting ill.
