Oh Hope! that springs to break the gloom
And shatters darkest night!
Oh, why I ever doubted Thee,
Thou chief of all delight!
In dark I prayed for Thee to come;
And when Thou tarried still,
I closed my eyes and wept the more -
In fear, my heart did thrill.
But, unexpected - 'twas then You came! -
(For, expected, Thou camest not);
But Hope hath sprang to break this gloom for
